How to remain strong when overwhelmed

Overwhelmed!
Convincing yourself to stay strong and positive through self talk, visualization etc is all great, but there are times in life we get overwhelmed. A surprise all nigher, a failure, a natural disaster, a death of a relative, even yourself getting hurt, are all realistic scenarios that can overwhelm us and leave us defenseless.

Even though we may have remained strong, through eg a daily practice of praying to God, or self talk in general, it is these tough times when we have to be strong. So what to do? what to do when we feel nothing works? Despite our work with the therapists, or reading great self help books, and even taking assertion training, what to do when nothing seems to work!!!!?

What to do?
Once again, it varies from person to person, and I believe we sometimes cannot use the same tool again and again. However below are some of my suggestions.

1-Don't do anything! Sometimes one is overwhelmed with stress, work or the immediate need of the situation that one simple should stop trying to remain positive and give full and rapt attention to the situation at hand. One can remind themselves that, just 'Get in the flow and get going, the rest doesn't matter' and that is certainly the kind of attitude one might need when in a difficult spot.

2-Look at the positives! one might fail at a big project or a big interview, whatever the case, one must try to find the best in the situation. Often, these is no positive and we must make our own. It is good to remind oneself that 'This is an opportunity to learn' or 'I will only be stronger once I get through this' or another way is to remind yourself of 'successful failures' such as Steve Jobs, who failed miserably only to rise back to the top. Whatever the case, we must convince ourselves to 'not feel good' but get back on our feet and know that we can make the best out of the situation.

3-'What does not kill you, only makes you stronger'. this is my favorite affirmation to use when I am in a situation that requires hard work and dedication. So what if its tough, it will not kill me!

Your technique can be one of the one mentioned, or some other, just remember to try to do whatever it takes to convince yourself. It is NOT ABOUT FEELING good, but feeling good enough to bounce back. That is what convincing yourself is all about!
