What’s your story?

Everyone has heard of the Hercules labours and Aesop's fables. Stories are great for entertainment, as well as to convey moral values. Human civilization has revealed in stories of higher achievement after a long struggle. We have seen it in movies, read it in novels, studied it in Greek mythology. However, if used properly, stories are great Metaphors as well. Be it Samsun or Odysseus, they all had to go through a struggle to achieve something great, often greater than themselves.

Stories, as metaphors, can be importantly suggestive. We know this from the practice of Hypnotherapy. The question then becomes, what can the ordinary person learn from this? What can one learn when they learn from the stories of struggle, be it a Marvel Superhero movie, a classic novel, or even the most mundane fable?

We really learn something great from stories, when we internalize them. Therefore one has to figure out what 'their' story is? Would they want to be like Peter Parker (spiderman) who is always doing the right thing? perhaps that's the story they want for their life. Maybe someone going through a struggle keeps hope beyond hope that one day they will reach home, like Odysseus. Others may want to view their life like the Arab boy in Paulo Coelho's famous novel 'The Alchemist' , where only the journey matters.

It is important we know the stories we believe in, the story we tell ourselves about ourselves. They can have the power to destroy us or to help us achieve our wildest dreams
