Nudge: Getting started is half the battle

We daily encounter situations which are uncomfortable. It can be talking to a boss, going into a meeting and for some even getting up to take a walk. Whatever the case, anxiety provoking events are common and everywhere. For severe cases of anxiety or panic, which may be due to some form of trauma or even a deeper mental health issue, I would recommend seeing a professional, however for everyday life, there are many techniques that one can use and one of them is 'nudging'

We we need it:
Many situations in life make us question ourselves i.e our self concept as well as our abilities. Going into a meeting a young graduate may think that they dont belong there or they cannot contribute enough. Similarly a new CEO may wonder if they have what it takes or even if they are meant to run a company. Such self doubt is common and is often accompanied by even questioning ones role or position in particular situation. However often these are situations one can either not avoid, or present a great opportunity for growth.

Nudge:
Nudging yourself to do something is usually enough as once we get the ball rolling, the rest follows. Nudging technique can include such things as positive self talk, promising oneself a treat, or setting up a system eg an Alarm clock for the morning. One can nudge themselves by a variety of ways depending on the context and the problem.

An excellent example is that of exercise. Often it is difficult to get it going however if one simply gets started, one can go through the whole routine as planned. The case is the same for when one does not feel like going to work but it all works out when they show up.

Conclusion:
Nudging is a powerful everyday tool that anyone can use to better their life. Like anything in life it is not the answer to everything and it may not work every single time (its not magic after all) but it is nonetheless an excellent tool to use and practice in daily life.
